Well, here's the progress report!
Firstly, I've been working on early gun prototypes (with sounds!).
They have no visual model, however it works by moving scanner objects attached to 'gun' objects with the character runtime.
The scanner creates particles upon the nearest solid object directly across from its origin.
Sound plays when activated, temporarily a FreeSound gunshot.
